You will depart from Port Chalmers and head out onto the Otago Peninsula passing through the small village of Portobello before reaching the start of your walk at Sandymount, a location that offers panoramic and breathtaking views. After walking through a tunnel of Macrocaropa trees fine views of Cape Saunders and the rugged southern coastline can be enjoyed. Walking around a predominantly flat track you will reach Lover's leap, an ancient sea cave that has collapsed forming a natural bridge surrounded by cliffs, with layers of volcanic ash and lava formed from an ancient volcano that erupted 13 million years ago.
Descending down the largest sand dune in Otago you will reach a private hut where you may enjoy light refreshments and take in the view of arguably the finest beach on the peninsula. This is one of the favorite haul out sites for the New Zealand sea lion. New Zealand fur seals can also be seen on the rocks basking in the sunshine. Depending on the time of your visit you may also have the opportunity to see the rare Yellow-Eyed penguin as you walk along the beach. The tour will then cross over farmland before heading back to Port Chalmers via the high road.
Please note: Average/reasonable level of fitness is required for an easy to moderate 1 hour 45 minute walk with gentle inclines and some steps. You may be dropped off in the city rather than at port at the end of the tour. If you choose to be dropped off in the city you will be required to make you own way back to port at your own expense.
